NBA owners concluded their latest meetings without casting a vote on the proposed Las Vegas expansion. Commissioner Adam Silver confirmed that a final decision is expected before the end of the year, with league officials maintaining a positive outlook on the franchise launch.
Financial Framework and Venue Planning
The decision coincides with this year’s Las Vegas Summer League, which featured the professional debuts of prospects AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson and Cameron Boozer. Approved franchises will carry a valuation between $7 billion and $10 billion, aligning with the $10 billion record established by the Los Angeles Lakers sale last year. League leadership has outlined a target schedule for new teams to begin competition in 2028. Arena availability remains a central factor in the condensed planning window. T-Mobile Arena, co-owned by MGM Resorts, People Inc and Bill Foley, has hosted the NBA Cup semifinals and finals since 2023. MGM CEO Bill Hornbuckle noted that the venue is included in preliminary discussions, while Foley has proposed funding $300 million to $400 million in facility upgrades to support a full-time NBA schedule. Multiple ownership groups have expressed interest, though most remain private. The league previously secured unanimous owner approval in March to evaluate Las Vegas and Seattle as potential relocation and expansion markets.
